Many families across Maine are feeling the pressure of rising costs and economic uncertainty. Whether it’s putting food on the table, keeping up with bills, or finding support for basic needs, these times are challenging for many. Here are some free resources for Maine families during tough economic times.

The Good Shepherd Food Bank: Maine’s largest hunger-relief organization distributes food to pantries and meal sites throughout the state. Visit their website to find a local pantry.
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): SNAP provides a monthly benefit to help low-income households purchase nutritious food.
Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program: This program is designed to provide low-income seniors with access to locally grown fruits, vegetables, honey and herbs.
Meals on Wheels: For decades, Southern Maine Agency on Aging has been providing nutritious and delicious home-delivered meals to homebound older adults in Cumberland and York counties.
Maine Housing First Home Loan Program: This program makes it easier and more affordable to buy a home of your own by providing low fixed interest rate mortgages. There are options with little or no down payment required, and if you still need help with the cash for closing costs, they also offer a down payment and closing cost assistance option called Advantage.
Low-Income Assistance Program (LIAP): LIAP helps low-income homeowners and renters pay for electricity costs by providing a credit on their electric bills.
The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP): HEAP helps qualified homeowners and renters pay for heating costs.
Assurance Wireless: This company provides a free cell phone to eligible consumers with free monthly data, minutes and unlimited texting.
Rainy Day Savings Account (RDSA): The RDSA is a savings account to help participants pay for unexpected expenses. Participants save up to $400 with a $400 match.
