Q. How Big Should My Emergency Fund Be?

Written by New Ventures Maine | Published on January 15, 2016

A. There is a wide range of opinions about how big an emergency fund should be. Your fund is going to depend on what amount you feel most comfortable with. The standard suggestions are 3 to 6 months, 6 to 9 months or 9 to 12 months of living expenses. If you are self-employed or any type of work where you income changes from month to month you may want to consider having an emergency fund on the higher end of the suggestions.  This may seem like a lot to start.  Start saving what you can and you’ll be surprised how fast it will grow if you include this savings in your budget and make regular deposits.
