Don’t pay for tax preparation. CA$H Maine’s local and trusted IRS-certified tax preparers will prepare and file your state taxes for free!

We utilize secure and encrypted online software, and all our volunteer preparers receive rigorous IRS training. Don’t pay a service for something CA$H offers for free: keep all your Maine state refund money for yourself!

Once you’ve received all your tax documents for 2025, contact your nearby CA$H Coalition tax site for more information about FREE tax preparation. Our tax preparers will make sure you are you getting all the credits that you are eligible for, including Earned Income Tax Credit (up to $8,046) and the Child Tax Credit (up to $2200 per child).
Many Maine residents are also eligible for the Maine Property Tax Fairness Credit (PTFC) and the Maine Sales Tax Fairness Credit (STFC).

Do You Qualify?

To qualify for free tax preparation services, you must meet all of the criteria below.

  • Your household’s combined income for the year is $69,000 or less. (Household can be any number of people)
  • You didn’t have any unusual types of income or expenses, such as rental property, farm income, or self-employment with more than $35,000 in expenses.
  • No one in the household lived or worked outside of Maine in 2025.
  • You or your spouse were not active military in 2025.
  • No one in your household is a foreign student, teacher or trainee in the US on a F, J, M or Q visa.

CA$H Offers Two Ways to Receive Free Tax Prep

In-person Tax Preparation

Make an appointment to bring your tax documents to a tax site location listed on our website. An IRS-certified tax preparer will prepare your taxes during your appointment time. In most cases, your taxes will be filed with the IRS that same day!

Drop-Off Tax Preparation

Bring your tax documents to a tax site location listed on our website. (Days and hours vary by location; some require you to make appointment in advance.) We can either scan your documents and return them to you right away, or you can drop them off and pick them up from the tax site at a later time. In either case, an IRS-certified tax preparer will work on your tax return and contact you if they have questions or need additional information.
