York County Community Action Seeks Volunteers for Free Tax Preparation Season

Sanford, December 5, 2014-  Since 2002, York County CA$H—Creating Assets, Savings & Hope—at York County Community Action (YCCAC) has helped more than 2,500 eligible York County residents collect nearly $5 million in federal and state tax refunds at IRS-sponsored VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites throughout York County.  YC CA$H is one of nine members of CA$H Maine, a statewide coalition that provides opportunities for hardworking Mainers to build assets and get ahead.

“The Earned Income Tax Credit is considered the largest poverty-reduction program in the U.S. with Census data showing that the credit lifted 5.5 million people above the poverty line in 2012,” shares Meaghan Arzberger, CA$H Coordinator at YCCAC.  “We could not help working families in York County claim this money without the support of volunteers during tax season.”

Volunteers can help prepare taxes or meet with families prior to filing to share resources acting as “Opportunity Guides”.  Interested volunteers receive training on tax law and do not need any tax experience to participate.  “We provide all the training and tools that a volunteer needs to be successful in helping families file and learn about financial resources in York County.  Volunteers just need to have a desire to help,” says Arzberger.

Training for “Opportunity Guides” will be held on Wednesday, January 14th at 4:30 PM at YCCAC in Sanford.  The Volunteer Tax Preparer training will start Monday, January 19th also at YCCAC at 6 Spruce St. in Sanford.  Volunteers completing the Tax Preparer training receive IRS Certification.  Any interested individuals may contact YCCAC to get involved at 207-459-2903 or email Meaghan.arzberger@yccac.org.

York County residents interested in receiving free tax help may call the YCCAC tax prep phone line at 207-324-5762 ext. 2718 or toll-free in Maine, 1-800-965-5762 ext. 2718.  Individuals may be eligible for free tax preparation if they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)or they participate in any YCCAC income-eligible programs.

CA$H Maine and its members are sponsored by an IRS VITA Grant and KeyBank. York County CA$H is a program of York County Community Action, whose mission is to alleviate the effects of poverty, attack its underlying causes and to promote the dignity and self sufficiency of the people of York County, Maine.
