February 9^th – FREE Super REFUND Saturday Tax Prep at Lewiston Memorial Armory, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., to Include a Community Resource Fair and Pulling/Reviewing of Credit Reports.

For the 10^th year in a row, IRS certified volunteer tax preparers, currently under the direction of Site Coordinator KC Geiger, will provide free Federal & State tax prep and e-filing for low-to-moderate income workers (earning $50,000 & under).  The phone line opens January 17, 2013, and Androscoggin County area residents may call 513-3160 to schedule their free appointment.

Actual tax prep will commence January 24^th and locations this year will be at the Lewiston Memorial Armory, Corner of Vale Street & Central, and Auburn City Hall, 60 Court Street.  The former Lewiston Multi-Purpose Center will no longer be a site, as it is now home to Longley School.  For date & time details, individuals may visit www.lewistonmaine.gov/lacash

Since 2004, Coalition outreach has resulted in over $15 million in refunds returned to Androscoggin County area residents, which Lewiston City Administrator Ed Barrett described as not only a plus for residents but the local economy.  He urged LMI workers to take advantage of the Coalition’s services, noting that last year over $2 million in Federal refunds, alone, were claimed.  The Coalition also promotes the Earned Income Tax Credit, a Federal benefit for those who work, and provides connections to financial literacy/asset-building offerings.

Approximately 1,500 low-moderate income workers were assisted with FREE tax-preparation of their 2010 taxes. This effort brought over $2,000,000 to our community in Federal Refunds and almost $400,000 in State refunds.

Not only did these families receive FREE state and federal tax preparation, they had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with asset-building coaches and learn about maximizing their returns and how to prepare for a “greener” financial future.
